At the Breakfast with Experts event in Ljubljana on 12 October 2026, the Austrian Ambassador to Ljubljana hosted Mme State Secretary Tamara Weingerl Požar and Dr. Matjaž Nahtigal for a discussion on where Slovenia stands in the EU. The conversation was moderated by Dr. Sabina Lange.
Topics included continuity and pragmatism in Slovenian foreign policy, competitiveness, connectivity with Central Europe and the neighbours, and closer ties with the US, as well as the role of consensus in EU decision-making.
The discussion also covered the “concentric circles” concept and its implications for EU cohesion and Slovenia’s role as a bridge to Southeast Europe, as well as strategic autonomy and the pace of decision-making, including the use of QMV.
Enlargement, the Western Balkans and the EU-US relationship were also discussed including during the lively discussion that followed.
