EU Enlargement Needs Economic Security Alignment

A new policy brief, “The Economic Security Gateway,” makes the case that the EU’s enlargement strategy must integrate economic security from day one, rather than treating it as an afterthought.

The brief argues that candidate countries such as Ukraine, Moldova, and the Western Balkans cannot simply adopt the EU’s economic security rules, they need to help design them. FDI screening has become a closing benchmark in accession talks, and alignment with the EU’s economic security framework is now the gateway to mutual protection, market access, and strategic partnership.

The brief is co-authored by Zoran Nechev and Wojciech Przybylski, and published by Visegrad Insight.

Why it matters:

  • Unaligned candidate countries on the EU’s borders represent vulnerabilities the Union can’t afford.
  • Economic security alignment is an immediate geopolitical necessity, not a long-term aspiration.
  • Critical raw materials, cybersecurity, and defence industry integration are all at stake.
