Four years of war in Ukraine have brought profound changes to Europe’s security architecture, global power dynamics and the role of the European Union in the world. These issues were discussed by Sabina Lange, Director of Think Europe, who took part in the television programme Debata z Bergantom, alongside Professor Rudi Rizman and Denis Mancevič.
Lange stressed that the war in Ukraine cannot be viewed merely as a regional conflict. Rather, it represents a long-term turning point that is reshaping Europe’s security order.
According to Lange, the European Union is entering a period of redefining its role. While strengthening its position as a geopolitical actor, the EU must at the same time reinforce its internal resilience and strategic autonomy.
Active Positioning Is Key for Slovenia
The changing European and global security environment also has important implications for smaller countries, including Slovenia. As Lange pointed out, this requires active positioning, a clear articulation of national interests and thoughtful foreign policy action.
The future of European security will, in her view, depend to a large extent on Europe’s ability to develop a common response to the security and geopolitical challenges further exposed by the war in Ukraine.
“Europe will be key to how this war ends,” Lange stressed.
The discussion also addressed broader questions surrounding shifting power dynamics, the future of European security and the role of the European Union in a world where stability and security can no longer be taken for granted.
The speakers also explored how Europe can respond to the long-term consequences of the war and what role it will play in shaping the future European security order.
The Importance of Informed Public Debate
The discussion demonstrated that questions surrounding the war in Ukraine and the future of European security require a broader context and a long-term perspective. Public debate on these issues is therefore particularly important because it does not oversimplify complex questions, but instead places them within a wider political and geopolitical framework.
